CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Victories by sophomore Bobby Shaw and junior Evan Sola lifted North Carolina an early 7-0 lead, but seventh-ranked Nebraska rallied for pins in three of the next five bouts and posted a 34-7 victory in NCAA wrestling action Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium. The Cornhuskers (14-1-1) also defeated Carolina (3-3, 2-0 ACC) at last weekend's Virginia Duals by a 26-12 margin.
Shaw got the Tar Heels off on the right foot with a 16-4 major decision win over the Huskers' Jeremy Emerson at 125 pounds, which gave Carolina a 4-0 lead. Sola, who is ranked ninth nationally, then extended the advantage to 7-0 with a 5-3 decision over Nebraska's Dominick Moyer at 133. With two wins each over the weekend, Shaw improves to 16-4 overall and 5-1 in dual matches, while Sola is now 19-3 and 6-0 in duals.
Trailing 7-0, Nebraska quickly took a 15-7 lead with pins in two of the next three bouts. Seventh-ranked Matt Murray pinned Carolina's Isaiah Britton in 1:38 at 141, and No. 11 B.J. Wright pinned Kyle Shelton in 1:14 at 157. At 149, the Tar Heels' Chris Ramos rallied late to get back in the match, but the Huskers' Chris Nedens held on for a 10-8 win.
Nebraska then put the match away with a major decision by sixth-ranked Jacob Klein over UNC's Garrett Atkinson at 165 and a pin at 174 by NU's Marc Harwood. No. 5 Travis Pascoe then downed Tar Heel freshman Justin Dobies, 14-7, at 184, increasing the lead to 28-7.
Carolina junior David Dashiell rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the 197-pound bout at four, but the Huskers' B.J. Padden picked up a point for riding time to earn a 5-4 win.
At heavyweight, UNC sophomore Spencer Nadolsky forced overtime with a reversal at the start of the third period but Nebraska's Mitch Manstedt posted an escape in the third period of OT to secure a 3-2 win and give the Huskers the 34-7 final margin. The loss dropped Nadolsky to 21-10 on the season and 5-1 in duals.
