RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina (3-4, 2-1 ACC) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and then rallied for wins in the final three bouts of the match, but NC State (5-4, 1-0 ACC) took the five matches in between, scored two pins and held on for a 21-17 victory in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action Friday at Reynolds Coliseum.
As has been the case throughout the dual season, Carolina got a quick start with wins by sophomore Bobby Shaw at 125 and junior Evan Sola at 133. On the strength of a third-period takedown, Shaw scored a 3-1 win over the Wolfpack's Garrett Cummings to move to 17-12 overall and 6-1 in duals this season.
Sola followed with a 17-1 technical fall over Jeremy Hartman at the 5:53 mark, giving the Tar Heels an 8-0 lead. Sola, ranked ninth nationally at 133, is 20-3 this season and 7-0 in dual matches.
NC State then won the next five bouts to claim a 21-8 lead. After tight matches at both 141 and 149, the Wolfpack got a pin from Kody Hamrah over UNC's Nick Royer at 2:11 at 157 pounds. At 165 pounds, NC State's Ryan Nowicki's takedown with seven second remaining in the bout gave him a 5-4 victory over Garrett Atkinson and pushed the Pack lead to 15-8. At 174, Kevin Gabrielson made it five straight wins for NC State with a pin of Tim Barbis at the 4:19 mark, extending the team lead to 21-8. Both Royer and Barbis were making their dual match debut for the Tar Heels.
Carolina won the last three bouts, all by decision, to come up four points short of a victory. Freshman Justin Dobies posted a 7-2 win over Jeremy Colbert at 174, while sophomore David Dashiell scored a 4-2 win over Zach Garren at 197.
Sophomore heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky added a 5-2 win over Jainor Palma to cut the final margin to 21-17. Nadolsky is now 22-10 on the year and 6-1 in duals.
Carolina returns to action Saturday against No. 21 Navy at 1 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium.
