Jan. 26, 2005
Senior Elisabeth Alsop earned her first East Atlantic Gymnastics League award Tuesday when she was named the EAGL Specialist of the Week for the week of Jan. 19-26. The award is presented to a gymnast who competed on no more than three events in a meet. Alsop was the first Carolina gymnast to receive the award since Natalie Halbach was honored on March 4, 2003.
Alsop helped the Tar Heels to a 195.10-189.30 win over William & Mary Saturday by placing in the top three on three different events. She tied for first place on uneven bars with a personal best 9.775 - the fourth-highest score of any EAGL gymnast on bars this season - to earn her first-ever win on an event. Before the 2005 season, Alsop had not competed on bars since Jan. 2003.
The senior gymnast also was the floor exercise runner-up with a score of 9.80 and took third on balance beam with a 9.85. Alsop's score on beam ties her for fourth place overall in the EAGL so far.
New Hampshire's Amanda Hall was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week for the second straight week, and teammate Rebekah Porter was the EAGL Rookie of the Week for the second time this year.
The Tar Heels (7-0) will next face EAGL opponent West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va., Saturday at 7 p.m.
