North Carolina Men's Swimmers Power Past Terrapins, 207-93

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshmen Philip Owen and John Sands led the way for the North Carolina men's swimming and diving team as the 22nd-ranked Tar Heels defeated Maryland 207-93 on Senior Day at Maurice J. Koury Natatorium Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the 13th-rated Maryland women remained undefeated on the campaign as the Terps downed the No. 15 Tar Heels 175-125 despite a pair of event wins by Carolina freshman Lindsey Marck.
The Tar Heel men got off to a good start with a come-from-behind win in the 200-yard medley relay as the unit of Jon Albrecht, Aaron Burns, Josh Glasco and John Sands powered to victory in 1:32.26. Glasco claimed the lead for the Tar Heels on the butterfly leg of the relay with a 22.29 split and then Sands scorched the field coming home in 19.87 to lead the Tar Heels to a win by 1.01 seconds.
Sands went on to win the 50-yard freestyle in 20.73 seconds, only .02 off his season best and he swam the second leg on Carolina's winning 400-yard freestyle relay, splitting 45.57 on a relay which won in 3:03.71. Philip Owen, another Tar Heel freshman, took top honors in both distance freestyle events for the UNC men as he won the 500 in 4:34.95 and the 1000 in 9:26.77.
The Carolina men won both relays and captured 10 of the 14 individual events. Nine different UNC men won individual events for Carolina on the day. Sophomore Aaron Burns had an individual win in the 100-yard breaststroke while also swimming on the victorious medley relay. Junior Jon Van Assen won the 100-yard butterfly and swam the leadoff leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Casey Kott won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.15 and then had the closing split on the 400-yard freestyle relay of 45.09. Junior Jon Albrecht swam the leadoff leg of the medley relay which won as well as the third leg of the freestyle relay which claimed top honors.
Marck was the top performer for the UNC women as the freshman from Newtown, Pa. won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:00.87 and the 100-yard butterfly in 54.84 seconds.
Maryland's women stayed unbeaten with the win. The Terps are now 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the ACC. The Carolina women finish their dual meet season 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the ACC.
Carolina's men improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the ACC with the victory with one dual meet remaining. The Maryland men, who were led by two individual wins by senior Erik Weinberg, are 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the ACC.
It was the final home meet for eight UNC seniors -- Jessie Brosch, Virginia Hanson and Kathleen Quinn on the women's team and Reid Owen, Eric Mohr, Eddy Matkovic, Jimmy Owens and John Hartmann on the men's team. The Tar Heel women will be idle until beginning the ACC Championships in Atlanta on February 16. The Tar Heel men close their dual meet season at NC State next Friday at 5 p.m.
