CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - In a meeting of two of the top defenses in the Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 11 Virginia (7-1-1, 3-0-0 ACC) managed a pair of second half goals and held off No. 2 North Carolina (7-1-1, 1-1-1 ACC) for a 2-0 victory Saturday at Klockner Stadium. The loss snaps an eight-match unbeaten streak to open the season for the Tar Heels, who were off to their best start since 1991. That Carolina team also opened 7-0-1 before losing in Charlottesville.
Junior forward Adam Cristman had a goal and an assist for the Cavaliers, who won their third straight ACC match.
After the teams played a scoreless opening half, Cristman put the Cavaliers on the board first with a 20-yard blast in the 51st minute for his seventh goal of the season. Just over 22 minutes later, Cristman helped set up a tap-in goal by freshman forward Yannick Reyering for the 2-0 lead. Joe Vide also picked up an assist on the goal, as Reyering guided the ball past Carolina keeper Ford Williams, who had come out of the net on the play.
Williams finished with four saves on the night and allowed two goals for the second time this season. Virginia took 13 shots to the Tar Heels' nine, while Carolina held an 8-4 advantage on corners. UVa keeper Ryan Burke made three saves and did not allow a goal for his ACC-best seventh shutout.
The Cavaliers outshot the Tar Heels, 8-5, in the first half, but Williams made three saves to keep the Cavaliers off the scoreboard until the second frame. Carolina has still not allowed a first half goal this season.
The loss snapped a string of three straight wins versus a top-25 opponent for the Tar Heels, who are now 4-1 against ranked teams this season. UNC has now dropped 14 straight games in Charlottesville and last won there in 1977.
Carolina hopes to return to its winning ways versus Elon at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fetzer Field.
