COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 8 Maryland scored twice in a three-minute span in the first half and added two more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second to cruise to a 4-1 win over No. 5 North Carolina Friday at Ludwig Field. Four different players found the back of the net for the Terrapins (10-3-0, 4-1-0 ACC), while freshman forward Brian Shriver scored the lone goal for the Tar Heels (9-3-1, 1-3-1 ACC).
Carolina, which had not surrendered more than two goals this season, allowed four goals for the first time since Maryland posted a 4-2 win over UNC in the 2004 ACC semifinals. The Tar Heels also gave up two first half goals for the first time this year.
UNC kept possession for much of the first half and held the edge in both shots and corner kicks, but Maryland buried both of its shots on goal to take a commanding lead in the opening frame. The Terrapins added two goals in the 47th and 54th minutes of the second half to essentially put the match away.
Shriver's goal in the 65th minute - his third of the season and second over the last two games - cut the lead to the 4-1 final margin.
Freshman forward Robbie Rogers broke a scoreless tie in the 21st minute with an unassisted goal for Maryland. Following a prolonged scramble in the box, Carolina goalkeeper Ford Williams came out of the net to in an attempt to corral the ball. He went to smother it on the ground, but the ball squirted away, and Rogers banged home the loose ball for his third goal of the season.
Just over two minutes later, Maryland added to its lead thanks to the first goal of the season for senior defender Chris Lancos. A.J. Godbolt served the ball into the box, and Maurice Edu chested it down to Lancos, who beat Williams one-on-one from about seven yards.
Just after intermission, Edu converted a goal of his own for a 3-0 Maryland lead. Godbolt picked up his second assist of the night when he sent a cross to Edu, who fired at the far post for his second goal of the season.
At the 54th minute, Maryland leading scorer Jason Garey netted the final goal of the night for the Terps when beat a UNC defender and buried a shot just inside the near post for a four-goal lead.
A Clearwater, Fla., product, Shriver put the Tar Heels on the board at 64:15. Junior forward Ben Hunter chipped the ball from the left flank to Shriver, who redirected a shot off the far post and into the net. Hunter's assist was his fourth of the year, good for a share of the team lead.
Williams went all 90 minutes in goal for Carolina and made two saves, while Maryland keeper Chris Seitz made one save and allowed just one goal. The Tar Heels held a 14-12 lead in shots and had 11 corners to Maryland's four.
The Tar Heels continue their four-game road swing at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., Tuesday. Carolina then travels to Wake Forest and High Point before hosting Duke on the Fox Soccer Channel at 8 p.m. Oct. 28.
