Women's Golf Takes Second At The Wildcat Fall Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky. --The North Carolina women's golf team captured second place at the 2005 Wildcat Fall Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky. In the third and final round of play the Tar Heels shot a combined score of 301, placing them ten strokes behind the first-place Florida Gators in the final rankings. Miami and Kentucky finished third and fourth respectively, while Mississippi State finished fifth after producing the third round's best performance with a score of 290.
Florida's Mallory Blackwelder took the lead in the 2005 Wildcat Fall Invitational after firing the tournament's lowest indivual round of 68 on the first day. She maintained her lead through the second and third round with scores of 71 and 73 to finish the tournament with a combined score of 212.
Tar Heel golfers Katie Miller, Laura Caniff, and Lauren Hunt each finished in the top 20. Miller, a junior from Jeannette, Pa., shot one of the lowest scores in the third round with a 71 and finished in a tie for second with Mississippi State's Amanda Mathis. Lauren Hunt, a freshman from Little River, S.C., captured her first collegiate top-ten finish with an overall score of 223. In a return to her home state, sophomore Laura Caniff finished tied for 16th with an overall score of 225. Ann Laney and Shannon Boyle also contributed to the Tar Heels' second-place performance.
The North Carolina women's golf team returns to action on Friday, October 7 when they host the Lady Tar Heel Inivation at Finley Golf Course.
