WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Michael Callahan scored his first career goal just over six minutes into the first overtime period to lift No. 10 North Carolina past No. 17 Wake Forest, 1-0, Saturday at Spry Stadium. The Tar Heels (11-3-1, 2-3-1 ACC) snapped a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing skid and defeated the Demon Deacons (9-4-2, 1-3-2 ACC) for the first time since 2000.
After neither team could manage a goal in regulation, Callahan found the back of the net at 96:08 to secure the win. The Cary, N.C., product beat a defender in the box and buried the shot in the far corner of the goal for the game-winner. With the goal, Callahan becomes the fourth freshman to score for the Tar Heels this season.
Junior Justin Hughes started in goal for the third time in the last four games and notched his second shutout of the season. Hughes made three saves on the night, while Wake Forest keeper Brian Edwards made seven stops.
The Tar Heel defense, which recorded its eighth shutout of the season, was bolstered by the return of sophomore Andre Sherard, who sat out Tuesday's win at William & Mary due to a red card received at Maryland.
The teams were fairly even on the shot chart, as the Tar Heels held a 12-10 edge and took seven corners to Wake's six. Carolina kept the pressure on Edwards, as it put eight shots on frame compared to just three for the Deacs.
With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 5-2 against nationally-ranked opponents this season and 3-0-1 in overtime. Saturday's game was the first overtime contest between Carolina and Wake Forest since 2002. The win was UNC's 11th of the season, already eclipsing last season's total.
Carolina closes out its four-game road swing at High Point Tuesday, Oct. 25. The Tar Heels return home to host Duke at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 on the Fox Soccer Channel.
