CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Virginia Tech forward Patrick Nyarko scored a goal in the 84th minute Saturday night as the Hokies (5-3-3, 1-1-2) handed the Tar Heels (8-2-1, 1-2-1) their first loss at Fetzer Field this season. The win marked Virginia Tech's first ever victory over Carolina as Carolina had been unbeaten against the Hokies in the all-time series of seven games.
Freshman Patrick Nyarko's third goal of the season came unassisted as Carolina's defense failed to clear the ball out of the back. Nyarko snatched the ball near the left side of the 18 and juked a defender to net the game winner past a diving Ford Williams.
Carolina possessed the ball for a majority of the game, but was unable to muster many real scoring opportunities and only outshot the Hokies 12 to eight. Freshman midfielder Scott Campbell and forward Corey Ashe each led the Heels with three shots a piece. Carolina's best scoring opportunity came midway through the second half when a Tar Heel cross from the left flanker scooted just past forward Stephen Bickford who attempted a diving volley kick.
Keeper Ford Williams allowed just his seventh goal on the season during the contest and notched his only save on a miraculous diving stop on Hokie midfielder Joshua Boateng's shot from 14 yards out. The allowed goal raised Williams' goals against average mark from 0.57 to 0.61 on the season.
Carolina returns to action versus Longwood Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
