CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior forward Ben Hunter recorded his second multi-goal game of the season, and freshman midfielder Scott Campbell added a goal and an assist, as No. 5 North Carolina posted a 5-0 victory over Longwood (2-8-1) Tuesday at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (9-2-1) scored five goals for the first time since a 2003 win over Mercer and recorded their seventh shutout in 12 games this season.
In addition to Hunter and Campbell, freshman forward Brian Shriver and junior defender Ted Odgers also scored, while junior Justin Hughes made his first appearance of the season in goal and notched his seventh career shutout. Carolina held possession for much of the match and recorded a 20-5 edge on the shot chart.
Shriver put Carolina on the board in the 12th minute when he tapped a feed from Campbell into an open net for a 1-0 advantage. The counter-attack goal came just 28 seconds after Hughes made a save - the only one he would be forced to make all night - on a point blank shot by the Lancers' Elvis Cosic.
After the ball was served to the Tar Heels' offensive third, Campbell dribbled into the box, drawing Longwood keeper Brandt Youmans out to the 12-yard mark. Campbell then sent the ball right to Shriver, who scored from 10 yards out in the center of the net. Shriver's goal was his second of the season.
The Tar Heels added to their lead in the 29th minute when Odgers buried a rebound for his first goal of the season and just the second of his Carolina career. Defender David Boole picked up an assist on the play as he fired a deep shot that Youmans stopped, but Odgers, whose only other goal came as a freshman in 2003, picked up the rebound and fired it into the lower left-hand corner of the net.
Early in the second half, Hunter netted his third goal of the season for a three-goal advantage. The Doncaster, England, native bent a shot from 15 yards out in the right side of the box inside the far post at the 51:22 mark. Freshman midfielder Michael Callahan was credited with his first collegiate assist on the play.
Following Campbell's team-best sixth goal of the season on a Ty Allison assist in the 69th minute, Hunter drove in his second score of the match at 71:17. He took a feed from freshman Jordan Graye and sent a ball past Longwood reserve keeper Tyler Marsh for Carolina's fifth goal. Graye's assist was his first as a Tar Heel.
With three more points Tuesday, Campbell leads the Tar Heels with 16 this season on six goals and four assists. Hunter is second with 11 points and has four goals, which have come in just two games. He also had a pair at NC State. A season-high 21 Tar Heels played versus Longwood, including Hughes, Allison, Abe Chenathara, Wes Shull and Michael Walters, who all played for the first time this year.
Carolina returns to action Friday at Maryland. The game will be televised live at 8 p.m. on the Fox Soccer Channel.
