Tulsa, Okla. Luchici and Pomeroy have made history this week, entering the tournament as an unseeded team which had to win two matches in qualifying to earn a berth in the 16 team main draw. This Carolina doubles team is the first to reach the finals of a grand slam tournament since Freddie McNair and Richie McKee lost in the 1973 NCAA Championship match.
The Tar Heels notched their fourth win over a higher ranked opponent on Saturday by defeating Ball State's Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson, 8-4. Luchici and Pomeroy entered the tournament ranked 50th in the country and have defeated the nation's fourth, 15th, 20th and 29th ranked teams in route to the final.
The Ralph Lauren Polo All-American Championships is the first leg of the collegiate tennis grand slam. The collegiate tennis grand slam includes the National Indoor Championships in November and the NCAA Championships in May. The All-American Championships have been held every year since 1979.
