Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Duke women's golf team and Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll clinched team and individual honors in the 2005 Lady Tar Heel Invitational after three days of play at UNC Finley Golf Coure. The North Carolina women's golf team slipped six spots on the final day of the play to finish in 14th place in an 18-team field that included some of the country's top women's golf programs. After putting together a solid second round score of 298, the Tar Heels shot a 24-over-par score of 312 on Sunday.
Sophomore Ann Laney and freshman Lauren Hunt carded the top scores for the Tar Heels on Sunday. Laney, a native of Charlotte, N.C., shot a four-over 76 in the third round to finish the tournament at 16-over with a score of 232 in a tie for 41st. Hunt, the Tar Heels' top individual in the final standings, fired a 77 in the final round to finish in a tie for 32nd with a score of 229.
"Lauren is a player with a lot of potential," says North Carolina head coach Sally Austin. "The fact that she's a freshman is very promising. She works hard, listens, and does all that we ask. Lauren is just determined to do well. Once she gets tougher and gains some more confidence I think the sky is the limit for her."
Duke continued its winning streak at UNC Finley Golf Course by claiming the team championship at this year's Lady Tar Heel Invitational. The Blue Devils have clinched nine consecutive victories at events hosted by the Tar Heels, dating back to 1997. The team finished this year with a decisive 21-stroke victory over runner-up Auburn.
"We're familiar with this course because the people over here are so giving to us," says Duke head coach Dan Brooks. "They let us play a lot of golf over here and we love coming over here. It's a course we're really comfortable with. This is a very fun tournament and we always enjoy it."
Duke was the only team to finish under par in the final round with a nine-under-par score of 279 for a tournament total of 861. The team was led by the tournament's individual runner-up Anna Grzebien, a junior from Rhode Island, who shot two-under for the tournament with a total score of 214. Blue Devil freshman Jennie Lee carded the lowest score of the third round with a four-under 68 to move up ten spots in the individual standings as the seventh-place finisher. Lee birdied seven holes on Sunday, including birdies on four consecutive holes, 13, 14, 15, and 16.
"Jennie shot an 80 the first day and was a little discouraged," says Brooks. "For her to then come back and shoot a 69 and 68 is impressive. That's the neatest thing."
Texas A&M's Ashley Knoll remained on top of the individual leaderboard to claim the individual championship at this year's Lady Tar Heel Invitational. Knoll fired a two-under-par 70 in the final round to contribute to her record-breaking second-round performance of 65 and first round score of 71. She finished the tournament with a 10-under-par 206, beating runner-up Anna Grzebien of Duke by eight strokes. Knoll has recorded seven rounds under par out of the nine rounds she has played this year.
"Ashley's play was just about flawless," says Texas A&M head coach Jeanne Sutherland. "She hit greens and fairways. Her focus was probably the best feature of her play. She was very much in the zone throughout the tournament and played 54 holes in that zone. It was pretty exciting to watch."
North Carolina head coach Sally Austin, assistant coach Patricia Martinson, and the rest of the course staff at UNC Finley Golf Course were pleased after another succesful tournament hosted by UNC.
"We enjoy doing this and I can't tell you enough how great of a job the staff out here does at putting this tournament on," says Austin. "This tournament allows the course to showcase what we have out here and it's beautiful. It takes a lot to keep a golf course in this kind of condition and our administration supports that. We have the perfect venue for hosting a golf championship of this caliber and it's great to have had one of the best fields come out to play."
The Tar Heels return to action on October 21, when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to compete in the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship.
