CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina volleyball team overcame a sluggish start to defeat visiting NC State, 30-25, 30-26, 30-20, Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium. Senior setter McKenzie Byrd led the Tar Heels (17-7, 12-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) with a double-double, registering 34 assists and 10 digs.
Neither team could put together much of a run in game one, as UNC outlasted NC State (7-15, 1-13 ACC), 30-25. Senior outside hitter Camilla Ihenetu had her best game of the match, picking up four kills on six swings and six digs. Senior libero Taylor Rayfield, who finished with 20 digs, added six as well.
The second frame was a game of runs, as the Wolfpack was unable to maintain momentum long enough to put the Tar Heels away. NC State used a 6-1 run to take a 14-13 lead, then won six of eight to move to 23-19. Carolina would respond, however, winning 11 of the last 14 poins to win 30-26.
After falling behind early, UNC was able to put the match away with a 30-20 game three win. The Wolfpack squandered an early 7-3 lead and fell behind by five at 20-15. NC State pulled within two at 20-18 before Carolina won 10 of the match's final 12 points to secure the match.
Sophomore middle Christie Clark had a solid all-around match, collecting six kills and six blocks while hitting .500. The Tar Heels were also able to limit Wolfpack standout Stefani Eddins to just four kills on .059 hitting.
Carolina stays home Friday night to host Duke at 7.
