CLEMSON, S.C. --- The University of North Carolina volleyball team got double-digit kills from four different players, including a team-high 15 from senior outside hitter Camilla Ihenetu, as the Tar Heels defeated Clemson, 30-22, 32-30, 30-25, Friday night at Jervey Gym. Senior outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis added 13 kills and 23 digs, while senior libero Taylor Rayfied had a match-high 28 digs.
Carolina (20-7, 15-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a 7-1 run to turn a 5-all tie into a 12-6 lead in game one. Clemson (10-14, 5-11 ACC) would get no closer than three at 12-9 as the Tar Heels cruised to a 30-22 win. Freshman outside hitter Lauren Prussing had five of her 13 kills in the frame.
Game two, which featured six ties and four lead changes, was the closest of the match. A 4-0 Tiger run gave Clemson a five-point lead at 17-12 and forced a Carolina timeout. The lead would swell to six at 20-14 before the Tar Heels began to rally. A kill by Ihenetu allowed UNC to draw even at 26-all, and a Prussing kill finally gave Carolina the lead at 28-27. After getting to game point at 29-27 on a kill by Amy Beaver, Clemson got three straight kills by Brittany Ross to take a 30-29 advantage. Kills by Prussing and Nyenhuis brought about another game point for the Tar Heels, and a block by Beaver and senior setter McKenzie Byrd sealed the game, 32-30.
It was the serving of Nyenhuis that helped put away game three. With Carolina clinging to a 24-22 lead, Clemson's Danielle Hepburn put a ball to the floor to cut the lead to one and force a UNC timeout. After a quick sideout, Nyenhuis came up with back-to-back service aces to push the lead to 27-23. Nyenhuis would serve the Tar Heels to match point at 29-24, and an Ihenetu kill two points later gave Carolina the match, 30-25.
The Tar Heels will now continue down Interstate 85 to Atlanta, where they will take on Georgia Tech Friday night at 7.
