Coach Roy Williams
Opening statement:
"Just a couple of things that I was looking for on the stat sheet to
see what the final was for the rebound totals because I think that was
a big key in our poor play at times in the second half the other night.
I thought we were much better defensively except we didn't finish the
defense by rebounding the ball like that 60-27. I think that we are
smaller than we were last year, but I still think that we could be a
very good rebounding team if we continue to box out in the defensive
board and be really active going to the offensive boards. I think our
play the other nights got us much more focused play and even Mike said
we didn't play like the team he saw on the tape he saw the other night,
and I don?t think we did. The other night we were so tight and made so
many hardly believable plays and so many turnovers, but I think tonight
we were really focused, and I tried to give every one about the same
amount of time, even though David Noel is always going to get more
minutes than anyone else but it was a fun time. A lot of guys got
involved and really did some nice things for us and again we caught
them on a bad night because they're not usually going to shoot 25% and
a half like they did first half."
On if Raymond and Sean came before the game and talked to the players:
"Raymond came in and sat in the coach's locker room and talked to us for
a few minutes. I don't think he went in and saw the team. I think Sean
just came on the court. I think we were already out warming up when he
came out here. I have been to Charlotte to see them play, and I have
talked to them a great deal and Sean was back here for football weekend."
On Wes and Byron's performance:
"Wes is a good shooter and hasn?t had many opportunities yet so I was
glad to see him knock some of them down. He rushed one I think he would
have made his last one as well. He's doing a nice job for us in
practice. I have confidence in Wes. Right now we are trying to give the
first nine guys playing experience and see who is able to do it in a
positive manner. I told Byron he was going to end up playing more
tonight. I was extremely concerned about Tyler's toe. If we would have
played the game yesterday he would not have played. He was feeling
better today and he went through a little shoot around this afternoon
and I think that it loosened up and felt better so but I still waited
to the pregame warm-up to decide if Tyler was going to start or play it
all. If I hadn?t of started him, I would not have played him at all.
ut I think Byron was more active tonight than he has been and made a
couple of his free throws he would have gotten in double figures as
well and that would have been a lot of fun."
Cleveland State Head Coach Mike Garland:
Opening Statement:
"Wow, they've made really significant steps in recruiting and getting guys in here with the loss of all those guys last year. Early on they hurt us on the offensive glass. We were trying to get back and keep them from scoring on the break but they would miss and run in and crash. We would be off balance and they would come in and just get in on the boards.
"But, this was a great experience for our kids. This is why you play these kinds of games. So you can learn from the experience. Teams and players this good, teams this well coached, are going to expose you. You're going to find out where your weaknesses are, where your strengths are, who's going to play tough. That's what we did tonight. It was a learning experience."
On Ja'Nathan Bullock:
"There's no question he was the best guy on the floor for us. We knew coming in that Ja'Nathan had the ability to do those kinds of things, but that he needed even more playing experience. He still made a couple mistakes. He tried to come out a couple times when he was tired and take the ball the full length of the court, which he can do. But, he can't do that under fatigue and make a play. He's a tough, hard nose kid. He's very athletic. He can score in the paint. On top of that he can shoot the jump shot."
