CHAPEL HILL --- Senior outside hitter matched her career high with 30 kills and senior libero Taylor Rayfield had a match-high 33 digs as the University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated visiting Boston College, 30-23, 20-30, 30-27, 30-24, Friday afternoon at Carmichael Auditorium. Kelsey Johnson led the Eagles (8-22, 3-18 Atlantic Coast Conference) with 22 kills, while Allison Anderson added 29 digs.
Carolina (22-9, 17-4 ACC) used an early 7-0 run to build a working lead in game one. The advantage would swell to nine at 17-8 before Boston College was forced to call a timeout. BC used a solid blocking effort to chip away at the deficit, drawing within three at 25-22. But the Tar Heels regrouped to win five of the games final six points to secure a 30-23 win. UNC was solid in the middle during the frame, getting seven kills, three blocks and no errors from Amy Beaver and Christie Clark.
Boston College took advantage of a sloppy performance by Carolina to even the match with a 30-20 win. The Eagles out-hit the Tar Heels .269 to .053, and UNC committed 11 hitting errors and five service errors. After playing from behind for most of the game, Carolina pulled to within three at 18-15. But the hosts would win just five more points the rest of the way as BC closed with a 9-3 run to end it.
Game three saw eight ties and four lead changes as the Tar Heels took a 2-1 lead with a 30-27 win. Nyenhuis was the difference for Carolina, recording a game-high 11 kills on 18 swings. BC led for the last time at 20-19 before UNC won five of six points to take a 24-21 lead. The Eagles briefly tied the score for the eighth and final time at 25-all, but the Tar Heels closed with a 5-2 run to seal the win.
Carolina used a 15-4 run in the middle of game four to blow open a close game and take the match, 3-1. Nyenhuis was again the go-to hitter for UNC, as she matched her career high on the final point of the match. BC showed signs of life with a 5-0 run at 29-19, but the Tar Heels were able to finish the job.
The win sets up a match to decide the ACC title on the final day of the season. Carolina will host league-leading Maryland (18-3) Saturday afternoon at 1. A win by the Tar Heels would force a tie at the top of the league standings, bringing into effect the league's tiebreaking policy. A three-game win by UNC would give the Tar Heels the title, as Maryland's win over Carolina earlier in the season was a four-game decision. A five-game Carolina win or a Maryland win gives the Terrapins the crown, while a four-game Carolina win brings total points scored in the series into play.
