CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman midfielder Scott Campbell recorded his first collegiate hat trick, and No. 4 North Carolina's defense logged its 11th shutout of the season as the Tar Heels (13-2-3, 3-3-2 ACC) cruised to a 5-0 win over Boston College in the regular season finale Friday at Fetzer Field.
Campbell scored the second of Carolina's two first half goals and added two more in a three-minute span in second to become the first Tar Heel with at least three goals in a match since Ryan Kneipper scored five versus Winthrop in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. Campbell also assisted on the first goal of the game for a career-best seven points on the night.
Juniors Corey Ashe and Ben Hunter also found the back of the net for the Tar Heels, who scored five goals for the second time this season and the first time against an ACC opponent since a 5-1 win at Maryland in 2000.
Carolina dominated the course of play and outshot the Eagles (5-8-2, 0-6-2 ACC) by a 24-7 margin in the match. BC managed only three corner kicks and put just two shots on goal, both well after the match was decided.
Goalkeepers Justin Hughes and Ford Williams each played a half, as Carolina notched its fourth straight shutout to close the regular season and its third in a row in ACC play. The Tar Heels now have 11 shutouts on the season, the most since the 2001 national champions notched 13.
Hughes played the first half and was not challenged, while Williams made two saves in the second period. Williams and midfielder Ty Allison were honored before the game as a part of Senior Day.
After not putting a shot on goal in the Oct. 28 scoreless tie with Duke, the Tar Heels got on the board in just the fifth minute of play Friday as Ashe scored a rebound goal in the fifth minute. Defender Michael Harrington assisted on the goal, as he dribbled forward and fired a shot from 25 yards that BC keeper Shane Boggis punched off the crossbar. Ashe collected the rebound at the far post and buried in the right side of the net for his sixth goal of the season and his fourth game-winner.
Fifteen minutes later, Ashe set up Campbell's first goal of the night at 19:45. He dribbled deep into his left-hand corner and sent a cross along the goal line that Campbell headed home at the far post for a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, the Tar Heels buried BC with three goals less than five minutes. Hunter gave Carolina a three-goal cushion when he took a feed from Campbell and nailed a left-footed strike from 20 yards out and bent it upper 90 just inside the far post for his sixth goal of the season.
Campbell took over from there as he scored in both the 64th and 67th minutes to complete the hat trick. The Plantation, Fla., product beat Eagle second half keeper Issey Maholo from about 10 yards out on both goals. The first came on a feed from Hunter, who spotted an open Campbell on the right for his fifth assist of the season, and the second on a Dax McCarty feed as Campbell fired again from the right - this time towards the far post and into the net. Ashe also picked up an assist on the Campbell's second goal, giving him four points on the night and 14 on the season.
Campbell now leads the Tar Heels with 25 points on a team-high 10 goals and five assists. Campbell's point and goal totals are the most for Carolina since Kneipper had 45 points and 18 goals in 2002.
Next up for Carolina is the 2005 ACC Tournament, which opens Tuesday, Nov. 8 at SAS Soccer Park in Cary. UNC's first match will be Wednesday, Nov. 9 in the quarterfinal round, and the Tar Heels will be seeded anywhere between No. 4 and No. 6 depending on the outcome of other conference matches this weekend.
