CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina softball team opened the 2005 campaign with a pair of shutout wins on day one of the Triangle Classic, downing UNC Wilmington, 8-0 in six innings, and Temple, 7-0. The Tar Heels were the only team in the Chapel Hill pool of the Triangle Classic to go 2-0 on the day.
In the afternoon's first game, the Tar Heels were stymied in the early going by UNCW pitcher Jess Luckett. Luckett held the Tar Heels hitless for 3.2 innings until a Jaclyn Holden double broke up the perfect game. The Carolina offense finally got on the board in the fifth, as an Erin Dudley single brought home the first two runs of the game.
After a third run in the fifth, UNC put the game away in the sixth. After a Jessica Young RBI single chased Luckett from the game, Whitney Gelin doubled home Erica Ennis to push the lead to 5-0. Two batters later, Joslin Higgins singled home Ennis and Cassie Palmer to extend the lead to 7-0. Dudley ended the game with a final RBI single to push the score to 8-0, initiating the mercy rule. Senior pitcher Ashley Allen (1-0) went the distance in the circle, holding the Seahawks to seven hits over six.
The Tar Heels got things started early in game two, scoring in both the second and third innings against the Temple Owls. After Palmer scored on a passed ball in the second, Holden knocked home Marissa May to push the lead to 2-0. Holden struck again in the fifth, doubling home Anna Evans for her second RBI of the day. Casey Testa and Higgins added RBIs later in the frame, increasing the Tar Heel advantage to 5-0. Holden finished the scoring with another RBI double in the sixth, giving her four RBIs for the night.
In the circle, junior Crystal Cox dominated the Owls, holding the opponents to three hits and striking out 10 to get her first win of the season.
Carolina resumes play in the Triangle Classic with two more games Saturday at 3:30 and 6. Each game is free to the public.
