ATLANTA, GA. - Kelly Woodruff, Lindsey Marck, Virginia Hanson and Lizzy Bruce also qualified for All-ACC accolades and the North Carolina women's swimming and diving team stands in third place at the conclusion of the fifth session of the 2005 ACC Championships Friday night at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The meet concludes with the last two sessions Saturday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Maryland maintained its lead heading into the final day of competition as the Terrapins seek their first-ever ACC title. The Terrapins have scored 469 points after three days of competition, leading Virginia (391), North Carolina (336.5), Florida State (313), Virginia Tech (242.5), Georgia Tech (209.5), Clemson (160), Duke (142), NC State (141.5) and Miami (135).
Maryland's Elizabeth Lavell recorded an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:14.33 in winning the 400-yard individual medley. Carolina freshman Kelly Woodruff and Tar Heel junior Amanda Smith both were timed in career bests as they notched second and fifth place finishes in the 400-yard individual medley. Woodruff, from Shoreline, Wash., captured All-ACC honors with her runnerup finish in the event, going 4:16.68, just off the automatic NCAA qualifying time of 4:15.93 in the 400 IM. Smith (Evans City, Pa.) had her career best in the morning and then bettered that in the evening in finishing fifth in 4:18.85. Woodruff moved into sixth place on the all-time UNC depth chart in the event with her time while Smith's time places her ninth on the chart. Sophomore Erin Cutrell (Ligonier, Pa.) placed 11th in the 400 IM for Carolina with her time of 4:25.97 while senior tri-captain Kathleen Quinn (Lancaster, S.C.) was 12th with a time of 4:26.36.
Freshman Lindsey Marck (Newtown, Pa.) became the fourth Tar Heel in the meet to earn All-ACC as she placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 54.55 seconds. Marck went a career best 54.38 in the preliminaries, third place on the Tar Heel all-time Top 10 list. Marck joined freshman Kelsey Morrissy, junior gia Santoro and freshman Kelly Woodruff who had made All-ACC in previous events during the Championships. Senior tri-captain Jessie Brosch (University Park, Md.) took 10th place with a time of 55.84 seconds and junior Emily Carroll (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.) was 11th with her career best time of 56.02 seconds.
GiGi DeToll defended her title in the 100-yard butterfly, recording a time of 53.77 and giving the Terrapins their second first-place finish of the evening. Florida State's Emily Breen clocked a time of 54.48, to finish second.
Senior Virginia Hanson (Birmingham, Ala.) continued UNC's success on the All-ACC front as she garnered such honors with her third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Hanson, who had her career best leading off the 800-yard freestyle relay Wednesday, tonight finished in 1:49.32 as she finished in an exact tie for the third spot with Jess Lewis of Virginia. Junior Leila Martin (Cornelius, N.C.) copped an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:50.58. Martin clocked her career best in the prelims with a time of 1:50.08. Competing in her second event in just a few minutes, Amanda Smith turned in a solid finish in the consolation heat of the 200-yard freestyle, clocking 1:50.67 to finish second in the heat and 10th overall in the event. The time also represented Smith's career best time in the 200 free.
Maryland's Chrissy Miller won the 200-yard freestyle with an NCAA A-standard time of 1:47.56. Georgia Tech's Vesna Stojanovska placed second in the event with a mark of 1:47.67.
Florida State's Lauren Brick garnered first-place honors in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.35. UNC junior Lizzy Bruce (Wichita, Kan.) became the sixth Tar Heel on the All-ACC squad after her second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. Bruce's time was 1:03.13 as she outtouched Mason Walsh of Virginia Tech by two one-hundredths of a second for the runnerup spot. After barely sneaking into the consolation final in the 16th qualifying spot, freshman Kelsey Morrissy (Horsham, Pa.) improved to 12th in the consolation final in 1:04.27, moving her into No. 10 on the Tar Heels' all-time list. Sophomore Marissa Nilon (Kennett Square, Pa.) won the bonus consolation heat (non-scoring) to place 17th, going a swift 1:03.85, her career best. Nilon took nearly two seconds off her prelim time of 1:05.61 in the event. It moved Nilon into sixth place on the Carolina depth chart in the event.
The Tar Heels had one competitor reach the final in the 100-yard backstroke -- sophomore Meagan Eickman (Spartanburg, S.C.) -- and she responded with a seventh-place finish with a time of 56.83 seconds, just off her season-best set earlier this year against Maryland.
Virginia's Brielle White won her third-consecutive 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.44. Maryland's Megan Knepper placed second with a time of 54.64, while Virginia Tech's Talita Ribeiro rounded out the medalist in the event with a 55.90 finish.
