COLUMBUS, Ga. --- Crystal Cox threw seven shutout innings and Julia Bove drove in both runs as the University of North Carolina softball defeated the DePaul Blue Demons, 2-0, in the opening game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Cox (6-2) extended her streak without walking a batter to 20.2 innings and struck out 12.
After leadoff hitter Saskia Roberson opened the game with a solid double, DePaul (4-7) could only manage two more hits and never advanced a runner beyond second. The game was a pitcher's duel throughout, as the two squads combined for only seven hits.
Carolina (13-2) finally broke through in the fourth. Jaclyn Holden opened the frame with a single and Casey Testa reached on an error to give the Tar Heels runners on first and second. After a fielder's choice and a groundout, Whitney Gelin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That's when Bove came up big, blooping a 1-2 pitch into shallow center to plate the only runs of the game.
The Blue Demons never threatened again, as Cox struck out seven of the last nine batters to end the game.
After a short break, the Tar Heels will take the field again tonight at 7:30 p.m. against San Diego State. Live updates will be available via GameTracker, which can be accessed on TarHeelBlue.com.
