CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - With the regular-season opener three weeks from today, the North Carolina men's lacrosse team saw its first outside action of the spring, playing three full scrimmage games Saturday at Henry Stadium. Coach John Haus liberally used all 43 players on his roster as the Tar Heels recorded wins over Greensboro College 7-3, Lynchburg 14-2 and Limestone 8-7. Junior attackman Ryan Blair had the most productive day offensively for the Tar Heels as he had seven goals and one assist.
UNC Coach John Haus used the first scrimmage of the day against the Greensboro College Pride to get a good look at his freshmen and a host of other reserve players. The Tar Heels sped to a 6-1 halftime lead as sophomore attackman Ben Mark had two goals and an assist in the opening 30 minutes. Freshmen Michael Burns and Nicholas Tintle both finished with one goal and one assist. Sophomore Trey Sheain played 60 minutes in goal for UNC and made six saves.
Carolina employed its regulars for most of the second scrimmage against Lynchburg. The Tar Heels led 6-2 at the half and then outscored the Hornets 8-0 in the second half for an eventual 14-2 win. Junior attackman Ryan Blair led the UNC offense with five goals and one assist while senior attackman Mike McCall recorded two goals and two assists. Both senior attackman Jed Prossner and freshman midfielder Ryan Walterhoefer recorded a pair of goals. Senior Paul Spellman played the 60 minutes in goal for UNC and made seven saves.
In the final scrimmage, the Tar Heels sped to a 7-2 lead by early in the third quarter as Ryan Blair and Ryan Walterhoefer each recorded a pair of goals. Limestone staged a spirited comeback as the Tar Heel non-starters were unable to can shots later in the second half. David Wooster led the Saints with three goals. UNC freshman Fletcher Gregory had the eventual game-winning goal with 12:09 left in the final quarter.
Freshman midfielder Nicholas Tintle had a goal in each of the three scrimmage games for UNC. Sophokmore Ryan Walterhoefer finished the day with a four-goal effort.
