CHAPEL HILL --- Crystal Cox tossed a five-inning no-hitter in game one and Carolina pounded out 19 runs on 22 hits in two games, as the Tar Heels routed visiting Furman, 11-0 and 8-0, Wednesday afternoon at the UNC Softball Complex. After scoring only one run in its last five games, Carolina (18-14) got four RBIs from Casey Testa and three each from Anna Evans and Jessica Young to score 8 or more runs in consecutive outings for the first time all season.
In game one, Cox (8-8) struck out 11 Paladins to pull within eight of Radara McHugh's school record of 686 career strikeouts. Furman (9-21) had only two baserunners in the contest, neither of which advanced beyond first base.
Testa had all four of her RBIs in the first two innings, with a long double to right center in the first and a line shot up the middle in the second. The Tar Heels scored nine runs through two to put the game quickly out of reach. Erin Dudley blasted her first career home run in the fourth to provide the final margin.
Game two was more of the same as starter Ashley Allen (4-3) and Alison Yin held Furman to only two hits. Three Tar Heels - Cassie Palmer, Marissa May and Julia Bove - were 3-for-3 in the game. Bove led UNC with two RBIs and a run scored, and drove in the eighth run of the game to end the contest in the sixth.
Carolina will now prepare for its second home tournament of the season, this weekend's Carolina Classic. The Tar Heels will host No. 3 California, Penn State, Harvard and Coastal Carolina.
