CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina softball team lost for the first time in five games Saturday, as the Tar Heels were no-hit by No. 3 California's Kelly Anderson in a 5-0 loss on the second day of the Carolina Classic at the UNC Softball Complex. Carolina drops to 20-15 on the year, while the Golden Bears improve to 27-3.
Cal got single runs in each of the first three innings, providing Anderson (14-1) with more than enough support. The first two Bear runs were unearned, as Carolina starter Ashley Allen (5-4) allowing only one earned run in three innings. Cal's Kaleo Eldredge reached on a catcher's interference call in the first and came around to score on an errant throw from the outfield. In the second, Julie Meyer reached on a walk, advanced to third on an error and scored on an Emily Friedman squeeze bunt.
Allen gave way to Crystal Cox in the fourth, and the Bears quickly added a pair of insurance runs. Friedman and U.S. National Team member Vicky Galindo had back-to-back doubles, and Galindo scored from third after Lindsay James got into a rundown and drew a throw to second.
Despite not recording a hit on the evening, the Tar Heels did manage to move a runner into scoring position in both the sixth and seventh. Jen Jacobs walked to lead off the sixth and pinch runner Theresa Nicholas moved to second on an Anderson throwing error. But the rally was short-lived, as Marissa May's sharp line drive to third was speared by Galindo and fired to first for a double play.
Anna Evans and Casey Testa each drew walks in the seventh, then moved to second and third on a Jessica Young groundout. But they would get no farther, and a Whitney Gelin line out to first ended the game and secured the no-hitter for Anderson.
The remaining schedule for the Carolina Classic is up in the air due to unfavorable weather expected in the Chapel Hill area. UNC's second game with Cal that was scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night was replaced by a game between Cal and Penn State. The Tar Heels will still play both the Nittany Lions and the Bears on Sunday if the weather permits. Stay tuned to TarHeelBlue.com Sunday for any schedule changes.
