GREENVILLE, N.C. - North Carolina sophomore Robert Woodard allowed just two hits over seven innings, but Michigan (5-2) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth and handed the No. 4-ranked Tar Heels (9-3) a third straight one-run loss, 1-0, Sunday at the Keith LeClair Classic at East Carolina's Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The game remained tied at zero before the Wolverines' Matt Butler doubled to left center in the ninth, scoring Leif Mahler to give Michigan the 1-0 victory over the Tar Heels, who scored just four runs in three games over the weekend.
Woodard's start continued the Tar Heels' outstanding pitching as he worked seven shutout innings and struck out two. Closer Matt Danford (1-1) worked the final two innings and took the loss after allowing his first run of the season on three hits and a walk.
Senior second baseman Greg Mangum led Tar Heels with two hits on the day from the leadoff spot. Carolina outhit UM, 6-5, but left eight runners on base.
Wolverine starter Derek Feldkamp tossed five innings, allowing six hits while striking out three and walking two. He gave way to Paul Hammond (1-0) in the sixth. Hammond, who got the win, tossed four innings, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out five and walking one.
Michigan also defeated No. 7 Georgia Saturday for two victories over top-10 opponents this weekend.
The Tar Heels return to Boshamer Stadium and hope to snap their three-game losing skid against College of Charleston at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
