CHAPEL HILL --- Crystal Cox, Ashley Allen and Alison Yin combined for a pair of shutouts to lead the University of North Carolina softball team to a sweep of UNC Greensboro, 8-0 and 6-0, Thursday afternoon at the UNC Softball Complex. Anna Evans was 3-for-3 with a home run in game one, while Jennifer Jacobs was 2-for-3 with five RBIs to lead the offensive attack in game two.
Carolina (29-21) got on the board early in the opener, but saw the offense stall for much of the game after that. Evans tripled home Cassie Palmer for the first run of the game, then scored herself on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Neither team would scratch again until the fifth, when Evans homered to right. In the meantime, Cox (14-13) was dominant in the circle. The junior pitcher struck out 10 Spartans and allowed only three singles.
The Tar Heels broke the game open in the sixth, pushing the lead to 8-0 to end the game with the mercy rule. Sophomore Joslin Higgins led off the frame with a solo home run, then three singles loaded the bases. Whitney Gelin hit a sharp grounder that got through the UNCG shortstop and rolled all the way to the wall to score all three runners. Jacobs then singled and Gelin scored from second on another error to end the game.
Game two was more of the same, as the Carolina pitchers stifled the Spartans while the Tar Heels took advantage of UNCG defensive miscues. UNCG (14-26) committed five errors in the contest which led to three unearned runs. Allen (8-5) and Yin held the Spartans to just one hit and struck out nine.
Jacobs did most of the damage in game two, as she drove in five of the six Carolina runs. The first three came in the second, as she cleared the bases with a double over the head of the left fielder to give the Tar Heels an early 3-0 lead. Theresa Nicholas got in on the action in the fourth, blasting her first homer of the season to right center. Jacobs struck again in the sixth, but not without some help. Her at-bat was extended when a catchable foul ball was dropped, and she took advantage, belting a long home run to make it 6-0.
The Tar Heels will now look ahead to a key Atlantic Coast Conference series with Virginia this Saturday and Sunday at the UNC Softball Complex. First pitch Saturday is set for 2 p.m.
