CHAPEL HILL --- Virginia's Jenn Wynn delivered an RBI squeeze bunt with one out in the sixth to push the Cavaliers past the University of North Carolina softball team, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the UNC Softball Complex. Jessica Young hit a long two-run home run in the fourth in her final ACC home game to lead the Tar Heels at the plate.
Virginia (20-25, 7-4 ACC) started the scoring with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Two walks and a Sara Larquier double loaded the bases in the third for Kierstie Cameron, who was hit by UNC starter Ashley Allen to force home a run. Larquier proved to be a tough out again in the fourth, as she ripped a single down the left field line to score Jackie Greer and make the score 2-0.
But the lead would be shortlived, as Carolina (30-23, 5-7 ACC) tied the score in the bottom half of the inning. Two batters after Marissa May reached on a bunt single, Young blasted a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right center to know the game at 2-all. The round-tripper gave Young 91 career RBIs, good for 10th in Carolina history.
UVa got two hits in the fifth off reliever Alison Yin (7-4), but were unable to push any runs across. The Cavaliers stranded 12 runners on base in the contest. But the visitors would get the game-winner an inning later. After Elea Crockett walked, Crystal Cox entered the game in relief of Yin. Crockett would advance to third when a Cox pitch got through Whitney Gelin, who fired an errant throw into center field. Wynn then delivered the surprising RBI, dropping a perfect squeeze bunt on a 1-2 pitch to score Crockett.
Starter Coty Tolar went five innings for Virginia to improve to 9-11 on the season, while Erin Horn faced the minimum over the final two innings to pick up her second save of the year.
Carolina will play its final home games of 2005 Wednesday when in-state rival UNC Wilmington visits the UNC Softball Complex. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
