CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina (12-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) enters this weekend's 2005 ACC Tournament in Baltimore, Md., as the tournament's No. 4 seed.

The Tar Heels will face No. 5 seed Virginia Tech (5-9, 0-4 ACC) on Thursday, Apr. 28, at 5 p.m. in M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md., home of the NFL's Ravens. The winner of Thursday's ACC Tournament first-round game will face No. 1 seed Duke in Friday's second semifinal game at 3:30 p.m. No. 2 seed Virginia will play No. 3 seed Maryland on Friday at 1 p.m. The championship game will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m.

TAR HEEL GAME NOTES:

Carolina enters the ACC Tournament with a 12-4 record, the most wins for the Tar Heels in a season since the 2002 team went 17-3, won the ACC Tournament and reached the NCAA Final Four. UNC went 7-9 in 2003 and 9-7 in 2004.

The Tar Heels' success in 2005 has come despite knee injuries that have sidelined juniors Melissa McCarthy, Brooke Dieringer and Christin Krejcik for the season. McCarthy and Dieringer were two of UNC's top four returning scorers entering the season.

Carolina leads the all-time series with Virginia Tech, 7-0, including wins every year from 1996-2001 and an ACC regular season win in Blacksburg on Apr. 11, 2005.

Carolina is 4-7 all-time in the ACC Tournament, winning the event in 2002 in Durham, N.C. The Tar Heels have lost their last two ACC Tournament games -- in 2003 vs. Maryland and in 2004 vs. Duke.

Thursday will mark the first-ever ACC Tournament meeting between UNC and Virginia Tech.

In ACC Tournament play, Carolina is 2-2 vs. Duke, 2-3 vs. Maryland and 0-2 vs. Virginia.

The Tar Heels have lost four games this season, all to teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation in the IWLCA poll at the time of the game.

In its last outing, Crolina squeaked by Old Dominion, 8-7, last Saturday (Apr. 23) in its regular-season finale at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Kelly Renzi and Jess Allen each scored twice for UNC in the victory.

In ACC play this season, Carolina won at Duke and Virginia Tech but lost at home to Virginia and Maryland.
