2005 Gymnastics Team Awards Announced

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The gymnastics coaches announced the 2005 gymnastics team awards Wednesday, recognizing the talents and qualities that team members brought to the program this year at an end-of-season dinner. Senior Olivia Trusty and junior Courtney Bumpers were named as the 2005 Most Outstanding Gymnasts.
Trusty, the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Senior of the Year, competed all-around in every meet for the Tar Heels. She was an EAGL Gymnast of the Week in February after a home meet vs. Rutgers and William & Mary where she won outright or tied for first on every event and in the all-around.
Bumpers, who was also the recipient of the Kaplan Award, recognizing outstanding achievement in postseason competition, was the 2005 NCAA floor exercise champion after scoring a 10.0 in the national finals. The Southeast Regional Gymnast of the Year also earned coaches' honors in vault and floor exercise.
Trusty was not the only senior to be honored, as Elisabeth Alsop, Morgan Stanley and Amy Williams were recognized for their contributions. Alsop received awards for her leadership and aesthetic qualities as well as the coaches' award on uneven bars. Stanley was awarded for her contributions as a student assistant coach, while Williams was recognized for her academics.
SophomoreChristine Robella was named in two awards: the coaches' award for balance beam and the Sunshine Award. Junior Mikel Hester, who recently underwent surgery on her shoulder after competing through injury all season, was recognized for commitment to excellence as well as courage and perseverance in facing adversity.
Sophomore Courtney Turco was named the 2005 Most Improved Gymnast.

Van Slyke Award recognizing the invaluable contributions of a student assistant coach: Morgan Stanley
Coaches' Award for outstanding performances on Vaulting: Courtney Bumpers
Coaches' Award for outstanding performances on Uneven Bars: Elisabeth Alsop
Coaches' Award for outstanding performances on Balance Beam: Christine Robella
