FAIRFIELD, CONN. - With the second pick in the opening round, the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Philadelphia Barrage selected University of North Carolina attackman Jed Prossner. Prossner, who started every game in his college career, ranked second on the team in scoring this past season with 29 goals and 15 assists for 44 points. The 2005 MLL Draft was conducted on the campus of Sacred Heart University on Wednesday, June 1.
An All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection for the third season in a row, Prossner finished his career ranked second on the school's all-time goals list with 113 and in a tie for seventh place on UNC's school ledger for points with 172.
Prossner was also named first-team All-America in 2005, becoming only the third Tar Heel attackman in history to win first-team All-America honors twice.
Prossner is a native of Easton, Md. He will play for Philadelphia in the MLL, a professional outdoor lacrosse league that began in 2001 with its current six teams. The Philadelphia Barrage moved from Bridgeport, Conn., prior to the 2004 season and the Barrage defeated the Boston Cannons to win the 2004 MLL title last August. Prossner is the son of Dave and Candace Prossner. Dave Prossner played college lacrosse at Penn and all three of Jed's brothers also played college lacrosse -- Mark and Greg at Hobart and Brent at Lehigh.
"It's a great feeling knowing it's one of the fastest growing sports out there," Prossner said after being drafted. "I'm glad to be a part of it, really."
