CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina outfielder Mike Daniel was selected by the Washington Nationals in the seventh round with the 204th overall selection of the 2005 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Tuesday.
Daniel led the Tar Heels in 2005 with a .351 average and added three home runs, 10 doubles and 22 runs batted in. He also had a .487 slugging percentage and played in 57 games, making 42 starts in the outfield. Daniel posted a .972 fielding percentage and stole seven bases.
Daniel was the third of three Atlantic Coast Conference players selected in the Nationals' first five selections. Virginia third baseman Ryan Zimmerman was taken with the fourth overall pick, and Maryland outfielder Justin Maxwell was selected at 114 in the fourth round.
With Daniel's selection, Carolina has now had at least one player drafted each year since 1978.
