IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The North Carolina field hockey team opened the season Saturday with a 2-0 win against Michigan at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, played at the University of Iowa's Grant Field. Sophomore Alli Tanner scored both goals as the Tar Heels started the year with a win over the Wolverines for the third season in a row.
"It was a great team effort, but we have a long way to go," said UNC coach Karen Shelton, who opened her 25th season with the Tar Heels. "I see a lot of potential, but we've got to continue to work really hard and make the changes and adjustments we need to make so that we keep growing as a team."
Tanner's first goal came just after halftime as she scored on a rebound following a Michigan save 3:15 into the second period. With 2:20 to play in the game, she scored again, this time on an assist from junior Laree Beans. Both goals came in scrambles after UNC had attempted penalty corners.
Senior goalkeeper Katy Tran made seven saves to earn the shutout. The Tar Heels had 11 shots to Michigan's eight but just three corners to six by UM. "Michigan has an outstanding team and I thought they outplayed us at times," Shelton said.
UNC returns to action on Sunday with a second ACC/Ten Challenge game, this one against host Iowa, which fell 2-0 to Wake Forest Saturday as the ACC swept both games of the doubleheader. Start time is 1 p.m. Eastern (noon CDT). "This event is a great way for us to start the season," Shelton said. "Playing two outstanding teams on back-to-back days goes a long way toward showing us where our team is right now and where we need improvement most."
