WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- After trailing for the first time this season, the North Carolina field hockey team scored three second-half goals to beat host William & Mary 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Busch Field and give coach Karen Shelton the 400th victory of her career. Shelton, in her 25th season as UNC's head coach, now has a career record of 400-109-9, all as coach of the Tar Heels.
"I feel so privileged to represent the University of North Carolina," Shelton said. "The fun thing about reaching this milestone is that gives us all a chance to pause and think about all the Tar Heels that have made those wins possible."
After the teams were even through most of the first half, William & Mary senior Kelly Giles scored in the 28th minute of play to put the Tribe (1-2) up 1-0 at the break. It was the first goal allowed all year by the Tar Heels, now 3-0 on the season.
Carolina tied the game less than three minutes into the second half when sophomore Heather Kendell, a midfielder from Chapel Hill, N.C., deflected Rachel Dawson's penalty corner shot into the goal. With 15 minutes remaining, sophomore Alli Tanner scored the gamewinner on a pass from freshman Kate Scholl, who came off the bench. Scholl, a midfielder from East Greenfield, Pa., scored her first career goal unassisted just a minute later to put the final score at 3-1.
"We got down a goal then responded really well," Shelton said. "It was a good second half performance and I feel like we made significant progress from last weekend. William & Mary is a very strong and balanced team so it was a great victory on their home field."
UNC finished the game with 12 shots to eight by the Tribe. Senior goalkeeper Katy Tran, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, made three saves in the win.
The undefeated Tar Heels open their home slate on Monday with a 3 p.m. game against James Madison at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Tanner, a midfielder from New Providence, Pa., leads UNC in scoring this season with three goals.
