Women's Golf Kicks Off 2005 Fall Season

Sept. 11, 2005
HANAHAN, S.C.-- Due to the lingering of Hurricane Ophelia out in the Atlantic, the North Carolina women's golf team started their season one day earlier than originally planned. The Tar Heels managed a 16 stroke improvement over their first round, which was played earlier in the day, to land them in a tie for tenth with Furman. As a team, Carolina was six over par for the second round, just one worse than current leader Tennessee. Following the Volunteers atop the leaderboard is Georgia and Virginia.
After two rounds of play, Tennessee's Nicole Smith sits atop the individual leaderboard at two under par. Following closely behind are Charleston's Angie Hill, Georgia's Whitney Wade, and Virginia's Leah Wigger.
For Carolina, Laura Caniff led the team after the first round of play, but following the second round, Katie Miller now leads after shooting even par during the afternoon round. Ann Laney improved her first round score by eight strokes after shooting one under par in the second round. Lauren Hunt and Shannon Boyle also saw improvements in their game during the latter round of the day.
Barring any Hurricane Ophelia developments, North Carolina will wrap up the tournament tomorrow with a final round of 18. The 2005 Cougar Classic is being played at Yeamans Hall Golf Club. The par 72 course features 6,084 yards of play and is located in Hanahan, South Carolina.
