CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Britt van Beek's goal with seven minutes to play gave the third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team a 1-0 win over No. 9 Old Dominion Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 7-0 with the shutout, their sixth of the season, while the Lady Monarchs fell to 3-4.
After the teams battled with no score for the first 63 minutes of play, UNC finally got on the board on its second corner of the day. Junior Brooke Miller's initial shot was blocked back to her, and she gathered the ball and shot again. Van Beek, a midfielder from The Netherlands, was stationed on the right side of the goal and batted the ball past ODU goalkeeper Mary Cate Gordon for the gamewinner.
"This was a tremendous team effort," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We have great respect for ODU and they always bring out the best in us. I knew ODU wouldn't quit, and neither did our kids. I'm proud of the effort and really pleased with the result."
The Tar Heel defense, which has given up just one goal all season, withstood 10 Old Dominion penalty corners and a total of 11 shots in the game. UNC goalkeeper Katy Tran made three saves.
The win came without two Tar Heel starters, Laree Beans and Rachel Dawson, who are away from the squad while representing the U.S. at the Junior World Cup in Chile Sept. 14-25. Saturday's game was the first of three that the two, both juniors, will miss. In their absence, freshman Kate Scholl and sophomore Jesse Gey made their first career starts.
"I told the team this game was important for us, that good teams step up when they need to," Shelton said. "I didn't want us to be concerned with what we don't have, I wanted the focus to be on what we do have."
The Tar Heels return to action on Friday when they open Atlantic Coast Conference play with a home game against No. 4 Duke. Game time is 7 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
