CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Scott Campbell netted his second straight game-winning goal with just 1:14 remaining in the first overtime period to lift No. 2 North Carolina to a 1-0 victory over No. 19 UNC Greensboro Tuesday at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (7-0-1) posted their third consecutive win versus a ranked opponent and are unbeaten after eight matches for the first time since 1991.
After playing to a draw at the end of regulation, neither team managed a shot on goal in overtime until Campbell connected on the winner at 98:46. After a takeaway, junior defender Michael Harrington served the ball from the left wing to sophomore midfielder Dax McCarty, who dribbled to the middle of the field and fed Campbell from just outside the box. Campbell, who was positioned on the left, fired from about eight yards into the upper part of the net for his fourth goal of the season and the win.
A Plantation, Fla., native, Campbell leads the Tar Heels with 11 points on four goals and three assists. McCarty's assist was his team-best fourth of the season. He also set up Campbell's winner versus Clemson Sept. 23.
Senior goalkeeper Ford Williams went the distance in the net for Carolina to notch his career-best sixth shutout of the season in just eight games. He made two saves on the night and has allowed only three goals this season in 748:46. UNCG keeper Jay Benfield made four stops.
Both teams had a number of chances in the first period, as the Tar Heels and Spartans (5-3-0) combined for 17 shots, including five on goal. Sophomore Adam Sloutscher had what was perhaps Carolina's best chance for a goal in the opening half when he sent a rebound header just over the crossbar in the 35th minute.
Carolina possessed the ball for much of the second half, posting a 7-1 edge in shots. The Tar Heel backline held the Spartans without a shot in the second period until forward Randi Patterson had one blocked in the final minute of regulation. After getting off nine shots in the first 30 minutes, UNC Greensboro managed just three more over the final 69 minutes of play, and the Tar Heels held a 17-12 lead on the shot chart for the match.
Carolina's win Tuesday avenged a 1-0 loss to the Spartans in Greensboro a year ago. The Tar Heels have now defeated three teams that they lost to last season - UNC Greensboro, VCU and Old Dominion.
UNC will face its fourth straight top-25 opponent when it travels to No. 11 Virginia at 7 p.m. Saturday.
