CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team opened its home season with a win Monday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium, beating visiting James Madison 1-0 on a second-half goal by senior Naomi Weatherald. The Tar Heels stayed undefeated and improved to 4-0 with the win, while the Dukes took their first loss of the season and fell to 3-1.
Weatherald, a back from Delamere, South Australia, had the day's only goal on a penalty corner direct shot with 19:53 remaining in the game. Junior Brooke Miller and sophomore Xan Funk assisted on the play.
The shutout was the third of the season for UNC goalkeeper Katy Tran, who had one save. UNC finished with seven shots to five by JMU and five corners to four by the Dukes.
"I told the team after the game that I'm always delighted with a shutout victory," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We played solid defensively and I think we're growing as a team. Give credit to JMU - they put all kinds of pressure on us."
UNC returns to action on Saturday at Temple then stays in Philadelphia to take on Monmouth there on Sunday. James Madison plays at Michigan State on Friday.
