The North Carolina gymnastics team will compete in its first meet of the 2006 season on Thursday at the George Washington Invitational at 6 p.m. This will be the fourth consecutive year that the Tar Heels have opened their season at the George Washington Invitational. Carolina has won the meet the past three years, and last year the Tar Heels outscored six other teams with a team score of 190.85.
Carolina is coming off an extremely successful 2005 season in which the gymnasts went 14-4-1 and won its second East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championship. Junior Courtney Bumpers also successfully defended her 2004 national floor exercise title with her ninth career 10.0.
The Tar Heels are ranked 22nd in the nation in the 2006 preseason poll. They hope to continue their dominance at the George Washington Invitational and build on their success from last year when they open their season Thursday in Washington, D.C.
