January 28, 2006
Carolina 86, Arizona 69
Carolina is now 9-2 this year against non-conference teams, including an 8-1 mark at home. The Arizona game was the last non-conference game in the regular season.
Carolina made 9 of 17 from three-point range (52.9 percent), the second-most accurate performance of the year and second-best in three games (season-high .619 on 13 of 21 at Florida State on Jan. 22, 2006).
The Tar Heels are 31 of 59 (52.5 percent) from three-point range in the last three games.
David Noel tied his career high with eight assists. He also had eight on March 3, 2005, against Florida State. Noel scored six points, the fourth time in the last five games he has been in single digits (UNC is now 3-2 this year when Noel does not score in double figures).
Danny Green made three three-pointers for the third consecutive game and scored in double figures (13 points) for the third straight contest. Green is 17 for 29 from the floor in the last four games (58.6 percent).
Green has made 9 of 12 three-point attempts over the last three games and has knocked home 11 threes in the last four games. Prior to the last four games, Green made seven three-pointers in the first 13 games.
Wes Miller scored in double figures (14) for the fourth time this year and the second time in three games. Miller is averaging 12.7 points in the three games in which he has started.
Miller scored a two-point lay-up with 12:51 left in the second half. That broke a streak in which made his previous 28 field goals from three-point range. His last three came at Kentucky on December 3, 2005. Miller has 40 baskets now, 36 of which are from three-point range.
Miller has made 12 three-pointers in the last three games, at least one in 13 straight games and two or more in six straight.
Quentin Thomas made three field goals in a game for the first time in his career and finished with a career-high six points. He had five against Vermont on Dec. 21, 2004.
Bobby Frasor had nine assists and zero turnovers, his best game of the year without a turnover and his most assists since he had 12 against Saint Louis on Dec. 7, 2005.
Carolina had 13 turnovers today, the fewest since UNC had 10 against Saint Louis on Dec. 7, 2005.
Tyler Hansbrough scored 20-plus points for the eight time this year and the sixth in the last eight contests. Hansbrough scored nine baskets for the fourth time this year and the second game in a row.
Hansbrough posted his third double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. He also had double-doubles against UC Santa Barbara and Virginia. He matched his season high with 11 rebounds against UCSB.
Carolina shot a season-high 56.7 percent for the game, and the eighth time in 17 games this year 50 percent or better. It was the fourth time this year and second time in three games Carolina shot 50 percent or better in both haves of a game (also Gardner-Webb, Cleveland State and Florida State).
Carolina held Arizona leading-scorer Hassan Adams to 12 points, 7.9 below his average and his fewest in a game this year since he had 10 in the season opener against Kansas.
The 17-point margin of victory is Carolina's largest in three wins against Arizona and the Wildcats' largest margin of defeat this year (previous 10 at Oregon State on Jan. 12, 2006).
The win was the 482nd of Roy Williams' career (now 482-121).
