Tar Heels Fall 2-1 At No. 8 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After scoring early, the fifth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team gave up two first-half goals and fell 2-1 to No. 8 Penn State Friday at AstroTurf Field. The Tar Heels are now 11-5 on the season, with all five losses coming to teams ranked in the nation's top 10. Penn State improved to 11-3 on the year with its first win over UNC since 2002.
The Tar Heels took the lead just 2:25 into the game when Carolina senior Karen Mann redirected a shot by junior Jesse Gey for her 14th goal of the season.
UNC's advantage didn't last long, as Mallory Weisen scored on a penalty corner 15:37 into the half, assisted by Jen Long and Allison Scola. The Nittany Lions took the lead for good less than 10 minutes later on a goal by Britney Long, assisted by Shaun Banta.
Penn State finished with 13 shots to UNC's eight, just three of which came in the second half. The Nittany Lions had 11 penalty corners to five by UNC.
North Carolina's next action is Oct. 22, when the Tar Heels travel to Maryland for their final Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season. UNC is 1-3 this fall in conference play.
