BALTIMORE, MD. - Fourth-quarter goals by senior Ben Mark and freshmen Joe Howard, Sean Burke and Colin Sherwood spurred a 4-0 run in the final period as the North Carolina men's lacrosse team rallied past Towson 12-10 in its second scrimmage of the day Saturday at the annual Leukemia Tournament. Earlier Saturday, the Tar Heels beat Penn State 15-8. Both games were played at St. Paul's School with UNC finishing 2-0 in the scrimmages.
Carolina was again offensively efficient as it scored 12 goals on only 33 shots. UNC got outstanding play in the goal as three goalkeepers combined to make 15 saves while allowing 10 goals. Sophomore Grant Zimmerman made six saves and allowed four goals, freshman Chris Madalon made eight saves while allowing six goals and sophomore Andrew Moss made one save while not allowing a goal.
UNC and Towson were tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter before the Tar Heels outscored the Tigers 3-1 in the second quarter. Senior midfielder Tom Sciolla finished off the scoring in the first half to put UNC up 6-4.
Towson scored the first two goals of the third quarter to tie the game at six. UNC briefly regained the lead on a goal by sophomore midfielder Ben Hunt but Towson scored four of the last five goals of the third quarter and led 10-8 with 20 minutes to play. The game was played in four 20-minute quarters with a running clock.
UNC rallied for the win by tallying four assisted goals in the final period. Freshman attackman Ben Mark scored off an assist by junior midfielder Jamie DeBole and then freshman attackman Joe Howard tied the match off an assist by Ben Mark. Freshman midfielder Sean Burke scored the eventual game-winner after taking an assist by freshman middie Blair Koontz. Freshman attackman Colin Sherwood finished off the scoring for UNC with an assist by freshman attackman Kevin Federico. Three of UNC's goals in the fourth quarter were scored by freshmen and two of the assists in the period came off the sticks of first-year players.
Towson won 15 of 25 face-offs but the Tar Heels scooped up 36 ground balls to mitigate the damage of losing the face-off battle. Sophomore attackman Bart Wagner led UNC with six ground balls. Junior defenseman Brian Burke and sophomore goalkeeper Grant Zimmerman each scooped up three ground balls.
UNC's scoring was amazingly balanced. Ten different players scored the 12 goals and six different players had single assists. Ben Hunt and Sean Burke each scored two goals. Ben Mark and Mike Burns each had a goal and an assist.
