CHAPEL HILL --- Heather Brooks had a career-best 11 kills and Amy Beaver and Megan Owens each added 10 as North Carolina defeated Maryland, 30-24, 30-26, 30-27, Friday night at Carmichael Auditorium. Owens, starting in place of Noelle Dyk, also contributed a match-high 12 digs. Dyk was sidelined with a sore hand.
Maryland (8-11, 1-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) raced out to an early 5-1 lead and pushed it to five at 13-8, forcing a Carolina timeout. The Tar Heels (5-14, 3-7 ACC) responded by winning 11 of the next 16 points to tie the score at 18. UNC would carry that momentum the rest of the frame and pull away for a 30-24 win. Lauren Prussing led the way with five kills on seven errorless swings, as the Tar Heels hit a sparkling .311 for the game.
Carolina was able to play through a sloppy start to game two to secure a 30-26 win. The key run of the frame started with the score knotted at 16. Behind three kills from Amy Beaver and two kills and a block from Owens, the Tar Heels won seven of the next eight points and forced Maryland to burn both of its timeouts.
The lead would swell to seven at 24-17 before the Terrapins made a run of their own. Katie Usher and Beth Gillming teamed up for a block to cap a 9-3 spurt that made it 27-26. But Maryland followed the block with a service error, and Carolina sealed the win with a Stephanie Jansma kill and a block by Jansma and Beaver. The Tar Heels were nearly perfect on the attack in the frame, collecting 15 kills against just two attack errors for a .351 hitting percentage.
Twice in game three Carolina built leads only to see Maryland storm back to tie it up. An ace and a kill by Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland gave the Tar Heels an early 8-4 lead. After the Terps evened the score at 11, UNC built another four-point lead at 19-15 behind Hanson-Tuntland and Brooks. But consistent blocking by Maryland quickly erased the deficit. With the score tied at 21, Carolina put together one final push. Brooks got things started with back-to-back kills off over passes and the lead grew to four at 27-23 thanks to a pair of Maryland attack errors. The Terps got back to within one at 27-26, but kills by Hanson-Tuntland and Prussing sealed it for the Tar Heels.
Beaver finished with 10 kills and four blocks, while Ashley Board added 11 digs.
Carolina will return to Carmichael Auditorium tomorrow night with a 6 p.m. matchup against Boston College.
