CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- A balanced offensive attack that saw three players reach double-digits in kills powered North Carolina past Boston College, 30-27, 30-25, 30-25, at Carmichael Auditorium Saturday night. Megan Owens led the way for the Tar Heels with a match-high 13 kills, while Lauren Prussing and Amy Beaver each posted 11 in the victory, which gave Carolina its first two-game winning streak in conference play this season.
Boston College (7-13, 5-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) jumped out to an early lead in the first game, using strong play at the net to thwart Carolina's offense and build a five-point advantage at 13-8. The Tar Heels (6-14, 4-7 ACC) were quick to respond, though, as they went on a 9-2 run to bring the score to 17-15, claiming their first lead of the frame in the process. A quick burst by Boston College would knot the score at 20, and the teams traded points until a string of errors by the Eagles gave UNC the space it needed to eventually take the 30-27 win. Owens, Beaver and Prussing contributed five kills apiece to pace the Tar Heel attack in game one.
Game two again saw Boston College at its best early, as the Eagles built an 8-2 lead and forced a quick Carolina timeout. Strong serving by Meg Eckert helped the Heels claw back, but Carolina didn't find the extra juice they needed until successive kills by Beaver gave UNC its first lead at 19-18 and all the momentum it would need. North Carolina closed out the game 30-25, with Owens netting five kills in the frame.
It was Carolina that grabbed a 4-1 lead early in game three, but Boston College rallied and the score remained tight until the middle of the stanza. Strong play from Beaver, who hit .500 with four kills in the game, and the rest of a balanced UNC attack would prove too much for the Eagles, however, as the Tar Heels seized control of the match with a crushing 11-3 run that put them up 25-16. Boston College answered with a bit of a charge, but two kills by Owens and a block and a kill by Heather Brooks put the Eagles away and gave the Tar Heels the 30-25 victory.
The Tar Heel defense was anchored in the back by Brianna Eskola and Ashley Board, who contributed 18 and 17 digs, respectively, while Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland and Heather Brooks provided the force up front with 5 blocks each. Setter Stephanie Jansma recorded 44 assists in directing a Tar Heel offense that hit .214 on the night, led by Beaver's .346 average. Noelle Dyk missed her second straight game with a sore hand.
After victories over Maryland and Boston College this weekend, North Carolina will look to improve to 3-0 on its current four-game homestand Thursday night at 7 p.m. against Virginia Tech.
