CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Corey Ashe scored two goals in a five-minute span in the second half to lead 13th-ranked North Carolina to a 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over host Boston College at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
The match marked the final regular-season game for both teams. The ACC Men's Soccer Championship opens in Germantown, Md., on Tuesday, Oct. 31. The Tar Heels (11-5-2, 3-4-1 ACC) snapped a five-game winless streak, while the Eagles (8-6-2, 3-3-2 ACC) saw a four-match unbeaten streak broken. Carolina's win means it will avoid Tuesday's opening round game between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds.
After a scoreless first half, Ashe took a shot from the left side of the box that beat BC goalie Chris Brown to the far corner at 51:54. Ashe doubled the Tar Heels' margin at 55:08, collecting a rebound in close and finding the back of the BC net. Ashe's goals were his first since a since the Sept. 6 loss to NC State, and his first goal snapped a 425-minute scoreless streak for Carolina.
UNC senior Ben Hunter made the score 3-0 at 70:14, converting a rebound from inside the box. Classmate Blake Beach assisted on the goal. Hunter now shares the UNC lead with four scores on the year and tops the team's scoring chart with 12 points.
The host Eagles got on the board at 85:21 when sophomore Greg O'Neil's cross from the left side of the field found junior forward Alberto Sanchis, who chipped the ball in the right side of the goal from in close.
Brown finished with four saves, while UNC senior goalie Justin Hughes stopped two shots.
The Tar Heels will be back in action at the ACC Championship at the Maryland Soccerplex Nov. 1. Carolina will learn its seeding following the rest of the week's league action.
