No. 8 Tar Heels Fall 3-1 At Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. - The eighth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team fell 3-1 at No. 3 Old Dominion Saturday, dropping its third consecutive game to dip to 11-7 on the season. The Lady Monarchs improved to 17-2 with their second 3-1 win over UNC this season. The teams' first meeting was in Chapel Hill on Sept. 16.
North Carolina will close out the regular season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. home game against Radford at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC's three seniors - Ashley Judge, Karen Mann and Brooke Miller - will be honored in Senior Day ceremonies before the game.
Saturday in Norfolk, ODU scored the game's first two goals. Just over 15 minutes into the contest, Caroline Nichols gave her team the lead on a penalty corner shot, assisted by Dana Sensenig and Nicolien van Nispen. Less than four minutes later, the Lady Monarchs struck again on a penalty corner to take a 2-0 lead. This time it was van Nispen who had the goal, with Sensenig and Nichols providing assists.
UNC got on the board at the 26:24 mark when sophomore Britt van Beek put in an unassisted goal. The goal was van Beek's ninth of the season, tied for second on the team with freshman Danielle Forword.
ODU tallied one more goal before halftime, scoring with less than four minutes on the clock. Darcy Pinchbeck had the goal and Sensenig contributed her third assist of the game.
Neither team managed to score in the second half, with UNC getting off four shots and ODU three. Carolina had three corners in the second half after drawing just one in the first half. The Lady Monarchs had 10 shots and seven corners in the first half, when Tar Heel goalkeeper Brianna O'Donnell made seven saves.
