AUBURN, ALA.- After taking the lead into the final round, the North Carolina women's golf team stumbled a bit down the stretch Sunday to finish fourth at The Derby Invitational. The Tar Heels shot a 20-over 308 in the final round to conclude the tournament at 33-over, 15 strokes back of champion Auburn. The host Tigers shot the tournament's lowest round with a three-over 291 to beat second place Alabama by 12 strokes. Tennessee took third while Florida, LSU and South Carolina tied for fifth, one shot behind the Tar Heels.
Carolina sophomore Lauren Hunt shot the Tar Heels best round of the weekend with a one-under 71. The Little River, S.C. native moved up two spots from fourth finishing just a shot back of the individual championship. Hunt shot three-under on the back nine knocking in three birdies and six pars bouncing back from a rough turn in which she shot three-over on holes 7-9. Senior Katie Miller joined Hunt in the top ten with her tie for seventh at five-over-par. Miller fired a two-over 74 on Sunday nailing in three birdie while playing holes 7-11 at three-under. Sydney Crane, who was tied for second after the first round, struggled Sunday shooting a 10-over 82 to finish tied for 39th.
Auburn's Marisa Milligan claimed the individual medalist honor after holding off Hunt and teammate Nicole Hage by shooting one-under 71 in the final round to finish the 36-hole tournament at one-over par. LSU's Rebecca Kuhn also shot under par Sunday to finish in a tie for fourth with first-round leader Margaret Shirley of Auburn at three-over.
The Derby finished up the Tar Heels Fall schedule as they conclude this portion of their season with an eighth place in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate, two fourth place finishes at the Lady Tar Heel and The Derby and a second place prize at the Cougar Classic. Carolina next tees off in the Chrysler Challenge in Destin, Fla. on February 24.
