GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina defenders Andre Sherard and Michael Harrington each picked up All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors for the second straight season Monday, as the league announced its annual awards on the eve of its postseason tournament. Sherard was named to the first team, while Harrington garnered second team accolades. Additionally, rookie forward Bill Dworsky was named to the league's all-freshmen team.
Both from Greenville, N.C., Sherard and Harrington are key components of a Carolina defense that has posted seven shutouts and logged a 0.81 goals against average this season. With Sherard in the lineup at his center back position, the Tar Heels have surrendered just 10 goals by the opposition on the season. He has started 17 of 18 matches this year and 61 of a possible 63 games since beginning his collegiate career in 2004. Sherard, who was one of two defenders to earn a first-team spot, was a second-team All-ACC selection a year ago.
Harrington has tallied six points on one goal and four assists from his outside back position and has started 17 games. His lone goal was the game-winner against Quinnipiac Sept. 12. A second-team all-league choice for the second year in a row, Harrington leads all current Tar Heels with 14 career assists and has totaled 22 points over the last four seasons. He has made 79 career starts.
Dworsky has made 12 starts on the year up front for the Tar Heels and has six points on two goals and two assists. His first career goal was the overtime game-winner against Elon Sept. 26, and he followed with a score at Virginia Tech Sept. 29. Dworsky is the eighth Tar Heel to earn a spot on the all-freshmen team, which shares the league lead with Wake Forest.
Tenth-ranked Carolina opens the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship against No. 1 Wake Forest at noon Wednesday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md.
