Carolina Alumni Phillips and Pomeroy Win Doubles Titles

Tokyo, Japan and Laguna Nigel, Calif. - Former Carolina All-American, Tripp Phillips won the ATP doubles title at the AIG Japan Open in Tokyo early Sunday morning. Phillips and partner Ashley Fisher defeated Americans Jim Thomas and Paul Goldstein 7-5, 6-2.
Phillips ascended to 29th in the ATP doubles rankings. Phillips and Fisher are now rated the world's number 14 ranked doubles team. Phillips and Fisher are competing in the Stockholm Open in Sweden. The indoor tournament has a $800,000 total purse.
In Laguna Nigel, Calif. Brad Pomeroy won the doubles title of a $10,000 futures tournament. Competing in only his third professional event, Pomeroy and doubles partner Stephen Ward defeated number one seeds Nick Monroe and Izak ven der Merwe, 6-4, 6-2. Pomeroy and Monroe were teammates for three years at North Carolina. Monroe earned All-America honors in singles in 2004, while Pomeoroy earned All-America status in doubles last season. Pomeroy was ranked the number one doubles player in the country for four weeks in January 2006.
