CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The North Carolina rowing team wrapped up its fall racing season on Sunday by competing in the Rivanna Romp, hosted by the University of Virginia. In a cold, rainy morning of racing on the Rivanna Reservoir, UNC's varsity eight boat finished 19th in the field with a time of 14:23.72 and UNC's second varsity eight was 27th in 14:59.05.
Due to a timing glitch, the race was run twice. As a result, the fours and pairs were cancelled because of time constraints. Host Virginia won the 29-boat race in a time of 13:12.43. Ohio State was second, followed by Tennessee and Minnesota.
The lineup for UNC's first varsity eight was Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Lisy McIntee, Megan McMullin, Adriann Spinks, Christin Cotten, Mary Sasson, Ruby Woodside, Emily Williams and Laura Rock. Racing in the second varsity eight were Vashti Chandler (coxswain), Maegan Wareham, Megan Mitzel, Eugenia Delbono, Priscilla Poor, Sarah Low, Chandler Sours, Liz Gardner and Katie Wood.
"We didn't race as well this weekend as last weekend (at the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta)," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We didn't handle the pressure of racing some of the top teams in the nation and race our race. We definitely have the potential to do that - we showed that last weekend, but if we want to race on that level we have to do it on a consistent basis."
The Tar Heels have another week of practice on the water before moving into offseason workouts on land. UNC's first competition of the spring season is on March 24, when the Tar Heels travel to Georgetown.
