WASHINGTON, D.C. - The North Carolina rowing team kicked off its spring season Saturday morning with a sweep of the competition in racing on the Potomac River. The Tar Heels faced off against George Washington, George Mason and host Georgetown.
"We're very, very pleased with the results and with sweeping the regatta," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "As a program, it was a great way for us to open the spring season."
Due to the strong current, all races began with floating starts, affecting the finish times.
In the first varsity eight race, UNC covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:54.4, followed by Georgetown in 7:05.3. The UNC second varsity eight was third in 7:13.0. In the second round of racing, which followed a 90-minute break for the collegiate crews while high school competition took place, UNC's varsity eight beat George Washington with a time of 6:30.1, while the Tar Heel second varsity eight bested George Mason's second varsity eight.
Racing in the UNC varsity eight were Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Lisy McIntee, Maegan Wareham, Adriann Spinks, Megan McMullin, Mary Sasson, Christin Cotten, Emily Williams and Ruby Woodside.
In the second varsity eight were Emily Zepeda (coxswain), Chandler Sours, Eugenia Delbono, Megan Mitzel, Maeghan Sill, Kathryn Winz, Katie Wood, Priscilla Poor and Elizabeth Gardiner.

In the second round, the UNC novice eight won its race in 7:02.2, followed by George Washington's novice eight in 7:20.3 and Carolina's second novice eight in 7:38.9.
Racing in the Tar Heel novice eight were Paige Wall (coxswain), Kallie Knop, Leigh Habegger, Cara Van Dorn, Kendra Radkowski, Kasey Munson, Andi Drabot, Whitney Hileman and Diane Reynolds.

"We saw a lot of good things and a lot of heart amongst our team," Haney said. "One of the things we've really been reiterating to them is focusing on your boat and making it as fast as you can. I think we did a really good job of zoning in on that and putting other teams on the defensive and keeping us on offense. There are definitely things to work on as always, but it's a really good way to start the spring season."
