CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team remained undefeated in its 2006 dual match campaign after notching a shutout victory over the Yale Bulldogs on Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The win, Carolina's fifth shutout this season, moves the Tar Heels to 7-0 on the year.
The Tar Heels entered the match looking to avoid a letdown after a 4-3 win Saturday over 26th-ranked Notre Dame in Chapel Hill.
Carolina, ranked 30th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, started slow in doubles play, but recovered to win all three matches to go up 1-0 on the Bulldogs.
"We talked about a letdown a lot, said North Carolina head coach Sam Paul. "We worried about being tired coming in, and we talked about guys being hungry.
"I'm proud of my guys because they came out hungry and ready to play. Doubles didn't start out great, but we got better as the day went on so it was good."
Sebastian Guejman and Derek Porter earned the first doubles victory for the Tar Heels at No. 3 by defeating Yale's Michael Caldwell and Jeff Dawson 8-5. At No. 2, Lenny Gullan and David Stone defeated the pairing of Brandon Wai and Josh Lederman 8-5 before seniors Raian Luchici and Brad Pomeroy, the No. 1-ranked tandem in the country, secured the doubles sweep for the Tar Heels by taking down Rowan Reynolds and Rory Green 8-4 at No. 1.
Carolina has won the doubles point in each of its seven matches this year.
The Tar Heels came out strong in singles play as Guejman earned the first singles point for Carolina at No. 5, defeating Reynolds 6-1, 6-1.
Luchici, the 5th-ranked player in the country, followed suit, defeating 33rd-ranked Wai 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. The victory gave Luchici his second straight win over a nationally ranked player. Notre Dame's Stephen Bass, ranked No. 8, fell to Luchici in three sets Saturday.
Sophomore Will Plyler clinched the match for the Tar Heels with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Yale's Green at No. 6.
Carolina earned its final three points after victories by Pomeroy at the No. 2 spot, Benjamin Carlotti at No. 4 and Porter at No. 3.
Pomeroy defeated Milosz Gudzowksi 6-2, 6-3 before Carlotti, ranked No. 93 in the country, defeated Dawson 6-2, 6-4. Porter closed out the match for Carolina with a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Bulldogs' Caldwell.
The Tar Heels will return to action at home Saturday, Feb. 11 when they host a doubleheader against Georgetown and UNC-W at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Play will begin at 10 a.m. against Georgetown. The match against UNC-W will follow at 3 p.m.
